In an election where by all accounts it is the Republican’s to lose, Bloomberg mentioned a little-reported phenomenon that could affect the Republican primary for the state’s only at-large House seat.

As Co-Chair of the House Select Committee on Jan. 6, the Never Trump Cheney has put herself in the precarious position of essentially having to count on Democrats voting for her in the Wyoming Republican primary to be reelected.

It could be quite a gamble for Cheney if she openly courts Democrats. Wyoming is a state that is deeply red. Donald Trump carried the state with 70% of the vote in 2020, compared to just 26% for Biden.

And still, Cheney has made being anti-Trump her entire identity.

Bloomberg quotes one such possible crossover Democrat as saying, “I did not support Liz prior to all of this because she’s a very conservative Republican — she voted with Trump 93% of the time — but I do now.”

Bloomberg elaborates on Cheney’s chances by noting, “Cheney will be counting on people like Newman to rescue her political career in a state where Republicans hold a four-to-one registration advantage over Democrats and Trump won 70% of the vote in 2020.”

Further, her campaign coffers are being filled from out-of-state, which Bloomberg hints is a result of her membership on the Democrats’ January 6 Committee.

Cheney’s primary challenger is attorney Harriet Hageman. Hageman has been endorsed by Cheney nemesis Donald Trump, and currently leads Cheney by a whopping 30 points.

Cheney Has Become No Friend To Republicans

In a tweet announcing her reelection bid, Cheney quipped, “In Wyoming, we know what it means to ride for the brand.” But if “the brand” is the GOP, they apparently have washed their hands of her.

Because Liz Cheney has decided Donald Trump is the hill she is going to die on she lost her position as GOP Conference Chair in the House.

In November of 2021, the Wyoming GOP voted to no longer recognize Cheney as a member of the Republican Party.

In February of this year, the Republican National Committee officially censured both Cheney and fellow January 6 Committee member Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) for their roles on the committee.

A Woman Without A Caucus?

Even if Liz Cheney should somehow eke out a win in August, she may be the kid in the lunchroom sitting all by herself. She has spent a lot of time calling her fellow pro-Trump Republicans “pro-Putin,” “anti-Semitic,” and “white nationalists.”

This after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy endorsed Harriet Hageman in March.

Cheney even seems to have adopted the Democrat rule of “never let a crisis go to waste.” Almost immediately following the horrific shooting at a Buffalo grocery store in May, Cheney joined the chorus on Twitter to accuse Republicans of “enabling white nationalism, white supremacy, and anti-Semitism.”

Cheney does not seem to be rattled by being declared persona non grata by her own party. She stated, “I won’t waver or back down. I won’t surrender to pressure or intimidation. I know where to draw the line, and I know that some things aren’t for sale.”

Careful Liz, could be lonely at the top.
