A Department of Justice spokesman confirmed on Friday that the agency will ask the Supreme Court to issue a temporary injunction against Texas’ anti-abortion law. The Justice Department will specifically ask the high court to reverse the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision on Thursday night that lifted a lower court’s decision to block the Texas law, spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement. About a week ago, U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman, an Obama appointee, granted an emergency request from the Justice Department and blocked enforcement of the law, known as Senate Bill 8 (SB8), which essentially bans all abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy. “The Justice Department intends to ask the Supreme Court to vacate the Fifth Circuit’s stay of the preliminary injunction against Texas Senate Bill 8,” spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement to news outlets on Friday.
