For just the fourth time of her 68 year reign, Queen Elizabeth gave a televised address today to offer a message of hope to her subjects and the world at large amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time,” the 93 year-old Queen said in pre-taped remarks given from Windsor Castle, where she has been self-isolating from the deadly virus.

She went on to call this “a time of disruption in the life of our country: a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all,” according to The New York Times.

The Queen’s speech was very reminiscent of the address her father King George VI gave on September 1939, as Britain prepared to enter World War II. Like her father before her, the Queen tried to bring the nation together by touting the British characteristics of stoicism and solidarity that can be used to bring down enemy forces.

“I hope in the years to come, everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge, and those who come after us will say that the Britons of this generation were as strong as any,” the Queen said. “That the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humored resolve and of fellow-feeling still characterize this country.”

The Queen has already been personally impacted by the coronavirus, as her 71 year-old son Prince Charles tested positive for the virus last month. Thankfully, he has since recovered, but he remains in isolation at his home Birkhall in Scotland at this time.

Given the advanced ages of the Queen and her husband Prince Philip, 98, they are both at serious risk of complications if they were to become infected with coronavirus. That’s why Buckingham Palace has gone above and beyond to isolate the couple and ensure that they do not become infected with COVID-19.

We applaud the Queen for taking the time to give a speech that gives hope to not only the people of Britain, but to individuals from all over the world. As a member of the greatest generation the Queen has been through many crises over the years, and she has gotten through all of them. Even when things seem hopeless during this pandemic, it’s important to remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that we will get through this.
