After the second attempt on his life in just two months, former President Donald Trump made a statement on Sunday afternoon.
“Peace and unity. Make America Great Again.”
“There were gunshots nearby, but I really want you to know that I am safe and healthy before the stories spread,” Trump said.
“I won’t let anything slow me down. I will NEVER GIVE UP!” he said. “I’ll always love you for being there for me.”
At first, Trump’s team put out a short statement reporting the shooting and saying that Trump was completely fine.
According to Sean Hannity, the former president told him that he was working on the fifth hole at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when shots were fired and Trump was tackled by the Secret Service to protect him.
Early news accounts said that cops found an AK-47 and a GoPro camera in the bushes outside the golf course.
While talking to the reporters, West Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said that police caught a suspect thanks to a tip from a witness.
“Someone came up to us and said, Hey, I saw the person run out of the trees. I caught him. I took a photo of the car and the tag,” Bradshaw said. “He jumped into a black Nissan.”
Online detectives were able to follow the accused shooter, Ryan Routh, on social media. The posts showed support for VP Kamala Harris’s bid for president and for President Joe Biden. They also showed support for Ukraine against Russia’s attack.
“Peace and unity. Make America Great Again,” Trump said at the end of his speech. “God bless you.”
