Michigan Dem. Rep. Cynthia Johnson Stripped Of All Committee Assignments Following Video Threatening Trump Supporters

On Tuesday morning, Michigan Democratic State Representative Cynthia Johnson posted a video to her Facebook overtly threatening supporters of Donald Trump, issuing both a call for violence by her “soldiers” as well as a warning for anyone who supports the President.

Some highlights from the three minute video are as follows:

  • “So this is just a warning to you Trumpers. Be careful, walk lightly, we ain’t playing with you. Enough of the shenanigans. Enough is enough.”
  • “For those of you who are soldiers, you know how to do it. Do it right, be in order, make them [Trump supporters] pay.”
  • “I wish I could be talking to y’all in a private room, because, uh, I just wish I could, but we’re public so…”

The video immediately spread across social media, primarily because of the shockingly overt threats made by an elected official against the very American citizens who she has sworn to represent.

On Wednesday the 9th, the Michigan House of Representatives released a statement informing the public that “Representative” Johnson has been stripped of all committee assignments as a direct response to her threats.

“Threats to either Democrats of Republicans are unacceptable to un-American. They’re even more unbecoming of an elected official. Rep. Johnson has been removed from her committee assignments, and we are looking into further disciplinary action as the proper authorities conduct their own investigations.”

Apparently, Representative Johnson had received a threatening voicemail following her appalling behavior in the Michigan State Senate hearing with Rudy Giuliani, which she references in the threatening video by stating that it had been turned over to the FBI. Some people were irritated that she had been stripped of her committee responsibilities when she was the one who had initially received a threat.

Well, the difference is that she is an elected political figure tasked with representing thousands of American citizens, and she took to social media to publicly and overtly call for violence against these very same citizens whose interest she took an oath to represent. While threatening voicemails are certainly condemned as wholly inappropriate, elected public officials are held to a certain standard and she very clearly crossed the line.

But, as it turns out, she’s got an interesting history with social media videos and public speaking in general.

Really, with a history of public behavior like this, I guess we shouldn’t be overly surprised that she thought it was acceptable to record a threatening video and upload it to a public forum.
