Taylor Momsen was only 7 years-old when she starred as Cindy Lou Who alongside Jim Carrey in the 2000 movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas, but it’s an experience she’s never forgotten.
Now 27 years-old, Momsen opened up to Entertainment Tonight about her memories of starring in the beloved Christmas movie.
“I do remember having a lot of fun on that set,” she said.
Because she was only 7 at the time of filming, Momsen could not wear the prosthetics that the rest of the Whos wore, so a special line was added in the movie to explain why she looked different.
“They wrote a line into the film, ‘She hasn’t even grown into her nose yet,’ because I couldn’t have all the [prosthetics], so they just put a little blush on my nose,” she explained.
Momsen has also never forgotten what it was like to work alongside Jim Carrey, who she said gave an “incomparable” performance as The Grinch.
“I just remember he was so kind, so concerned but so methodical with what he was doing,” she recalled. “Even at that young of an age, I remember watching him and thinking, ‘I’m watching an artist at work.’”
The biggest impression the movie left on her, however, was her character getting to perform the song “Where Are You Christmas?” It turns out that this is the experience from the movie that would change Momsen’s life, as she is now both an actress and a musician.
“The Grinch was the first time I went into a recording studio,” she said. “I’ll never forget walking into this beautiful studio with a massive console in front of me and putting headphones on and singing into a microphone for the first time…”
“It was such an impactful moment in my life,” Momsen added. “It made me go, I want to make music for the rest of my life. I love being in a recording studio.”
Though Momsen has worked on many other projects since How The Grinch Stole Christmas, she is still sometimes recognized as Cindy Lou Who to this day.
“It’s certainly funny now when people don’t realize I played Cindy Lou Who and they might know me from my music or something and they put two and two together and you get the giant reaction of ‘I can’t believe that’s the same girl from How the Grinch Stole Christmas!’ And I get a huge kick out of that,” she said. “I grew up, but I think deep down I’ve still got a lot of Cindy Lou Who in me.”
