After countless statements against fossil fuels and fracking, then countless statements contradicting himself, President Joe Biden cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline project. With the stroke of a pen, he revoked the permit to “construct, connect, operate, and maintain pipeline facilities,” effectively destroying thousands of blue collar Union jobs, billions of dollars in wages, and doing nothing substantive to help the climate.

.@JoeBiden wasn’t in the White House for 30 minutes before he canceled the Keystone XL Pipeline & put THOUSANDS of Union workers out of a job with the stroke of a pen.
He canceled 1.6 BILLION dollars of Union contacts & 900 MILLION dollars in Union wages.
But hey, nice hashtag. https://t.co/ckjjXyGsu5— Sean Parnell (@SeanParnellUSA) January 21, 2021
President Biden’s decision to cancel the Keystone XL Pipeline on his first day in office was reckless.

And the Unions who are losing all these jobs are the same ones who helped put Joe Biden in office.
It would be hilarious to watch the Union reactions if it didn’t also mean the ruin of countless American jobs and financial futures, which is all the more tragic considering the current state of our economy.
Consider Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), who issued a statement of “unanimous and enthusiastic” endorsement of presidential candidate Joe Biden. They said,
“After discussions with our leaders and members, the General Executive Board of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) unanimously, enthusiastically, and proudly endorses Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris for President and Vice President of the United States of America… Joe Biden and Kamala Harris stand out as the blue-collar candidates… Joe Biden is one of us.”
But after the stroke of the “blue-collar candidate’s” pen killed thousands of Union jobs, LIUNA said,
#Pipeline construction has been a lifeline for many #LIUNA members across the country. The anticipated decision to cancel the #KeystonePipeline will kill thousands of good-paying #UNION jobs! #pipelinesarelifelines #energy pic.twitter.com/p0BxD1vPHV

The United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters is in a similar situation. In August they officially endorsed candidate Joe Biden, saying,
“This endorsement is about putting UA members to work and fighting for fair wages and good benefits. Under a Biden Administration, that’s exactly what we’ll get… Joe Biden will be a fierce ally to our UA Brothers and Sisters in the White House.”
Now they have released a very different statement, condemning Biden’s cancellation of the project, saying,
“Sadly, the Biden Administration has now put thousands of union workers out of work. For the average American family, it means energy costs will go up and communities will no longer see the local investments that come with pipeline construction.”
And the North American Building Trades Unions (NABTU), who endorsed Joe Biden in October, now say they are “deeply disappointed in the decision.”
Of course they are deeply disappointed in the decision by their endorsed candidate to kill thousands of Union jobs, especially considering those Union employees (or at least the Union leaders) were the ones who helped to elect him in the fist place.
Then again, probably none of those Union leaders who endorsed Biden will feel any of the negative effects from this Keystone decision.
But I’m honestly not sure why they are acting surprised or outraged about this. They had to have known this was coming, especially considering the many times that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris expressed their desire to ban fracking an d fossil fuels.
In fact, I actually wrote about this back in October after the Vice-presidential debate when said that Joe Biden has been “very clear” that he doesn’t intend to end fracking. I then detailed his comments over the course of his presidential campaign regarding fracking and fossil fuels, which you will see are convoluted, contradictory, and anything but “very clear.”
In the interest of semantics, Joe Biden’s executive order has not, in fact, “banned” fossil fuels or fracking, just like he (later) said he wouldn’t. But, true to his earlier promises, he won’t need to ban it if he simply doesn’t permit it.
