A former lawyer at the FBI is expected to plead guilty today of falsifying evidence used to renew the FISA warrant that allowed surveillance against the Trump campaign in 2016, according to the Washington Examiner.
Kevin Clinesmith, who worked on both the Hillary Clinton emails investigation and the Trump-Russia inquiry, will admit that he falsified a document during the bureau’s targeting of Carter Page, according to multiple reports. Clinesmith, 38, claimed in early 2017 that Page was not a source for the CIA when he actually was – a falsehood used to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act renewal against Page.
Clinesmith, a member of Mueller’s special counsel team, has been under investigation for allegedly falsifying evidence for a while now. He has a pretty strong anti-Trump bias, claiming after the 2016 election, “The crazies finally won” and “Viva le resistance.”
Before signing the third FISA renewal against Carter Page in 2017, an agent wanted clarification on whether Page had ever been a source for another government agency.
Horowitz found that Clinesmith altered an email from a CIA liaison “by inserting the words ‘not a source’ into it, thus making it appear that the liaison had said that Page was ‘not a source’ for the other agency.”
The third FISA renewal application was signed based on the assertion in that email.
This is big. Trump, along with many others, has been saying for years that the surveillance of his campaign was illegal and based on dirty information. Now we have a former FBI lawyer basically admitting Trump is right.
