A nurse has shared how some of her Trump-supporting patients have continued to deny the existence of Covid even as they lay dying of it.

Jodi Doering, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, said she has treated more than one doomed patient who criticized her for wearing PPE while slating President-elect Joe Biden.

Jodi, who works as an ER nurse, explained: ‘Their dying breaths are literally “Find out what’s wrong with me.” And when you say it’s Covid, people say, “No, that can’t be it.”‘

The nurse appeared on CNN after tweeting about her experiences with dying Covid deniers.

Her tweets, which have been shared more than 70,000 times, say: ‘I have a night off from the hospital. As I’m on my couch with my dog I can’t help but think of the Covid patients the last few days. The ones that stick out are those who still don’t believe the virus is real. ‘The ones who scream at you for a magic medicine and that Joe Biden is going to ruin the USA. All while gasping for breath on 100% Vapotherm (a powerful respiratory aid that helps patients breathe). They tell you there must be another reason they are sick.

‘They call you names and ask why you have to wear all that “stuff” because they don’t have COViD because it’s not real. ‘Yes. This really happens. And I can’t stop thinking about it. These people really think this isn’t going to happen to them. And then they stop yelling at you when they get intubated. It’s like a fucking horror movie that never ends. There’s no credits that roll. You just go back and do it all over again.’

These were astonishing statements, and, not surprisingly, they captured the attention of millions. Multiple US senators and Pulitzer-prize-winning journalists were among the throngs who tweeted out the CNN interview, which was also written up by The Washington Post and other mainstream outlets. “This is the cost of disinformation,” wrote Atul Gawande, a New Yorker contributor and member of Joe Biden’s coronavirus task force. Senator Elizabeth Warren called it “heartbreaking.”

Perhaps it’s worth considering that Huron Regional Medical Center has seen a total of six Covid-19 deaths to date. Beadle County, where Huron is located, has registered a total of 22 such deaths, 13 of which occurred since August 1. And in Sanborn County, where Doering lives, there’s been one Covid-19 death. It’s certainly possible that the other facilities where Doering works have seen a higher number of fatalities; she may indeed have watched a great many patients die, as so many frontline workers have. But when all we have is one person’s story, it’s hard to know exactly what it means.
