Father Who Died Of Cancer Left His Son $10 To Buy His First Beer On His 21st Birthday

A Massachusetts man has become a viral sensation after taking to social media to reveal that his late father left him $10 so that he could buy his first beer on his 21st birthday.

“Almost 6 years ago before my dad passed he gave my sister this 10$ bill to give to me on my 21st birthday so he could buy me my first beer, cheers pops havin this one for you!” Matt Goodman tweeted alongside a photo of himself sipping a beer.

Goodman, whose dad died of cancer back in 2014, had no idea that his father had given the money to his sister Cassie along with instructions that it be used to purchase his son’s first beer when he turns 21. Cassie and her mother kept this beer money a secret until his milestone birthday, which came around last weekend.

Goodman could not help but become emotional when Cassie handed him the $10 bill and explained the story behind it.

“She kind of explained the backstory and everything, and then it turned into a pretty emotional moment, and [I] started crying,” Goodman told CBS Boston.

Cassie explained that since their father’s passing, her brother has struggled with his absence at birthdays and major events.

“Him and my dad were so close, and he’s had such a hard time anytime that a monumental moment comes up in his life that my dad’s not there,” she added of Goodman.

“It’s just something so typical that my dad would have done,” Cassie said. “To buy his first beer. Him and my dad were so close and he’s had such a hard time anytime that a monumental moment comes up in his life that my dad’s not there.”

Goodman spent a lot of time with his father when he was alive, as they would often go fishing, ride quads or play washer toss in the backyard of their home.

“Me and him were just like best friends,” Goodman recalled. “Anytime we would hang out, it was just like having fun.”

After receiving countless messages of support from people from all over the world, Goodman encouraged them to make donations to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, which helped his father.

“Appreciate all of you asking for my venmo, but instead if you wanted to send money feel free to donate any amount to dana farber they did a lot for my dad so that would be much appreciated!” he tweeted.

His dad would be very proud!
