The Academy-Award winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the top stars in Hollywood for years, but these days, she stays away from the acting world much of the time to focus on her lifestyle brand Goop. In a new interview, Paltrow revealed that this transition in her life partly came about because of the disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
“And, and again, like this wasn’t conscious at the time, but I started to feel, and, you know, frankly, I think part of my, part of the shine of acting wore off, you know, being in such intense public scrutiny, being a kid who’s like living every breakup on every headline,” Paltrow, 48, said in a new interview.
“So if you compound those things with the fact that like, you know, to be totally candid, I had a really rough boss for most of my movie career at Miramax,” she continued.
This “rough boss” was undoubtedly Weinstein, who founded Miramax in 1979 and ran it for 26 years until 2005, the year he founded The Weinstein Company. Paltrow starred in the 1996 Miramax movie Emma before winning her Oscar in 1998 for her work in the film company’s movie Shakespeare In Love.
Paltrow previously accused Weinstein of sexually harassing her in a hotel room, and today she is given some of the credit for taking him down.
“I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified,” she told The New York Times in 2017.
Weinstein, 68, is currently serving a 23 year prison sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault earlier this year. He was once arguably the most powerful man in Hollywood before Paltrow and dozens of other women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct.
Fans of Paltrow should not despair too much, however, as she clarified last year that she has not fully retired from acting.
“What I say is Goop is my full-time passion, and being the founder and CEO of Goop is what I do all day every day, and occasionally when something is the right thing and it works out around my children and my Goop life, I’m able to participate,” she said, according to Page Six. “I think I’m just not focused on full-time acting right now.”
