The disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein got some good news in court on Friday when it was decided that he will not go to Los Angeles to stand trial for his alleged sex crimes there until April.
Page Six reported that defense lawyers and L.A. prosecutors agreed to push back his extradition to the California city for a second time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The issues pertaining to the transportation of someone from New York to California and specifically with respect to Mr. Weinstein given his very serious health conditions remain the same,” explained his attorney, Norm Effman.
Weinstein, 68, appeared virtually at the extradition hearing from Wende Correctional Facility in upstate New York, where he’s serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault. He was seen wearing a burgundy shirt, a black wristwatch and a white face mask, and he rubbed his head or flipped through a yellow notepad throughout the hearing.
The judge concluded the proceedings by adjourning the extradition hearing to April. Before it began, a local television asked for permission to film, but Weinstein loudly objected.
“From my point of view, no access,” he blurted out . “We would oppose photographs as well.”
“We aren’t looking for publicity,” his lawyer added.
In Los Angeles, Weinstein is facing 11 counts of rape, sexual battery and other raps stemming from the allegations of five women. He is facing 140 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
Weinstein was arguably the most powerful man in Hollywood before over one hundred women came forward to accuse him of various sex crimes. Weinstein has long claimed that he is innocent of all charges, and that he has only ever had consensual sex with his partners.
Earlier this month, Weinstein got a visit in prison from his 27 year-old girlfriend, Alexandra Vino.
“They were in a back room that is kept specially for prisoners in IPC — involuntary protective custody,” a source who witnessed the meeting said. “He got up several times to use the bathroom. He can still only get about with a walker, just like when he was in court, but the difference between then and now is that he has a lot more color in his cheeks, he didn’t look so deathly ill.”
“She had to keep away from him, there is no hugging or touching now, and of course, they both had to wear a mask,” the insider added. “But they sat close together, and I am sure if it weren’t for the COVID restrictions they would have been holding hands. ‘Their visit, like all those in IPC was filmed — there was a camera on a tripod in the room with them. A correction officer sat by the camera and two more were stationed just outside the door.”
