A video released shows the heartbreaking mass burial of New York City’s unclaimed victims who have died from coronavirus.
It was reported by Reuters that the city of New York has started hiring laborers to bury the unclaimed victims taken by coronavirus. New York has been among the hardest-hit towns in America. We understand logically that the city has millions of Americans living on top of one another, but in our heartstrings, we also understand that New York always seems to get the short end of the stick.
While those of us in middle America live with the fear of it spreading to our cities and taking our family members away prematurely, New York, our nation’s gatekeeper, is on the frontlines fighting the invisible invader.
We can talk about politics and say that they voted for this mess and the ineptitude brought by their elected officials. Still, the reality is that they are Americans, no matter who they voted into office.
This is my love letter to New York, we were there for you when the towers fell to help pick up the pieces and get you on your feet, and we will be here for you when the spread slows to a halt to do the same thing.
One American life lost to a virus that started in China is one too many.
More from Reuters:
“The city has used Hart Island to bury New Yorkers with no known next of kin or whose family are unable to arrange a funeral since the 19th century.
Typically, some 25 bodies are interred each week by low-paid jail inmates working on the island, which sits off the east shore of the city’s Bronx borough and is accessible only by boat. That number began increasing in March as the new coronavirus spread rapidly, making New York the epicenter of the global pandemic.
There are about two dozen bodies a day, five days a week buried on the island, said Jason Kersten, a spokesman for the Department of Correction, which oversees the burials.
Before burial, the dead are wrapped in body bags and placed inside pine caskets. The deceased’s name is scrawled in large letters on each casket, which helps should a body need to be disinterred later. They are buried in long narrow trenches excavated by digging machines.”
