One of the most shocking moments of Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey over the weekend came when she claimed that she felt so isolated as a royal that she started getting suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy with her son Archie. Now, Meghan’s estranged father Thomas is speaking out to address these claims that were made by his daughter.
“Had I known she was having psychological problems, I would have been there for her,” Thomas said in an interview with “Good Morning Britain.” “Biggest problem here is she’s pretty much ghosted all of her family on her mother’s side and my side.”
He went on to say that it made him “upset” that Meghan had such dark thoughts when she was pregnant.
“It would have been easy for her to reach out to me and any of the rest of her family — who she claims she doesn’t know,” Thomas said. “But the other thing is that I would think that she could turn to her husband.”
Thomas, who said that Meghan has not spoken to him since before her wedding, made it clear that he wishes his daughter had decided to come to him with her struggles.
“The bottom line is she didn’t lose me. She made a statement saying she lost me. She didn’t lose me,” he continued. “I would have always been there for here. I’m there for her now if she wants me.”
In this same interview, Thomas said that he wishes he hadn’t posed for staged paparazzi photos in the lead-up to Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry. She said in her interview with Oprah that it was him lying about this that led to their estrangement.
“I wish I hadn’t done the whole thing but here’s the other side…It’s like no one took any time to protect any member of our family,” Thomas said. “We were attacked by the press every day – my oldest daughter, my son, myself, my grandchildren — all of us were attacked by the press. Nobody was there to care for us. No one looked after us.”
He also said that he only took part in this photoshoot in the hopes of repairing his image after he saw that the press “were making me an alcoholic, they were calling me names, they were talking about how I dress.”
“So, yes, I went through this deal with this [photographer] who was going to make me look better. Maybe I got sucked into it but I believed him and I thought it was going to work. It didn’t work, of course. When it was exposed, I said, ‘What’s happening?’” Thomas added. “Well, they waited three days before the marriage and released the photos. When that happened, I said, ‘How’d this happen? What do I do?’ He said, ‘Just deny it. It’ll go away in one day.’ It didn’t go away. It hasn’t gone away yet.”
Though Thomas feels he was “left out to dry,” he still wants to make amends.
“In spite of all that, I still apologize,” he said. “I’m apologizing today again.”
