Ossoff Rips McConnell for Fundraising Shortly After RBG’s Death—But He Did the Same

Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff—who attacked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) for fundraising on the heels of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death—is doing the same thing.

In fact, Ossoff nearly beat McConnell to the punch, blasting out a fundraising email less than 24 hours after the announcement of her death on Saturday afternoon seeking donations to help Democrats guard Ginsburg’s “legacy.”

Now Ossoff says that McConnell, who first pressed supporters for donations Saturday morning, has “no dignity.”

“On Friday evening, we were all at a loss for words when we learned of the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” Ossoff wrote in a Thursday fundraising email. “Less than 24 hours later, Mitch McConnell sent an email to his supporters asking them to give him money to help him ‘fill the vacancy.’ Disrespectful doesn’t even begin to describe it.”

Ossoff’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

It is not the first time Ossoff has been hypocritical over fundraising. He has consistently criticized the influence of corporate PAC money, but he accepted $37,500 in the second quarter of 2020 from leadership PACs that were funded by corporate PAC money.

Ossoff is trying to become the first Georgia Democrat to win a Senate race in 20 years. His race against Sen. David Perdue (R., Ga.) is critical to determining which party will control the upper chamber next year.

President Donald Trump will nominate a replacement for Ginsburg on Saturday, and Senate Republicans have the votes to proceed with the confirmation process ahead of the election.
