Oy, the humanity.
A United Airlines flight from Newark to Tel Aviv briefly sent passengers into a tailspin when staff announced that the only food available for a mid-flight meal for passengers in economy would be ham sandwiches.
The announcement came just moments after United flight 84 took off and left many Jews on board with a bad taste in their mouth.
“The announcer was clearly very embarrassed when explaining to the entire flight that they were overloaded with ham. I’d say it was met with a mix of bemusement. Particularly as the announcer stated, if there’s anyone who can’t eat ham on the plane, please let me know,” one passenger told the Washington Free Beacon.
Ham, like all pork products, is strictly forbidden in Judaism, and the presence of ham sandwiches on a flight to Israel is unusual. Pork is also forbidden in Islam, which means Israel’s Muslim minority would also be impacted.
“It’s a very bad look, an odd mistake to make,” a second Jewish passenger said. “Certainly has me wondering.”
United Airlines flights to Israel were halted in June during a brief but furious air war between Israel and Iran. Flights came back online in July.
The airline has not been shy about letting pro-Hamas employees display Palestinian flag pins that “represent their pride.”
Former Obama press secretary Josh Earnest serves as United’s executive vice president of communications and advertising. He did not respond to a request for comment.
