Betty White is a 99 year-old Hollywood legend who is known for acting in such classic television shows as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls.” When she isn’t acting, however, White is known to be a devoted animal lover who spends much of her time helping all kinds of creatures.
That’s why she’d surely get a kick out of this story!
Veterinarians at the Saco River Wildlife Center in Limington, Maine were caring for a porcupine named Betty White last week, and after examining her, they thought she had a tumor. Thankfully, it turned out that she didn’t have a tumor at all, and was instead pregnant with an adorable porcupette!
My CBS 4 reported that Betty is a North American porcupine who was brought to the center back in February because she was suffering from mange and ringworm. That month, a veterinarian did remove a cancerous tumor on her back side.
Last week, veterinarians examined Betty again and noticed that her stomach felt hard. Given the fact that she’d had a tumor just two months ago that was cancerous, they initially feared the worst.
“We knew there were two options: Betty either had another tumor internally, or she was pregnant,” the Saco River Wildlife Center said. “And this is where the story changes and quickly! It was confirmed that Betty White was indeed pregnant. And not just pregnant, she was full-term, and the baby was already in the birth canal.”
Last Friday, Betty gave birth to an adorable porcupette just days after her pregnancy was confirmed. Veterinarians with The Saco River Wildlife Center said that both Betty and her porcupette are in good health.
They plan to continue to treat Betty and her baby before releasing them back into the wild together at a later date.
“These are the moments that make the difficult days so incredibly worth it,” the Saco River Wildlife Center said.
Betty White the actress (not to be confused with the porcupine!) has been open about her love for animals for decades.
“Animals don’t lie,” she once said. “Animals don’t criticize. If animals have moody days, they handle them better than humans do.”
