A surprising story about Prince William is making the rounds this week, and it involves him once being chased by a police dog at the Queen’s country estate after he was mistaken for a royal trespasser.
PC Jon Chandler, who is retiring from the Norfolk Police, gave an interview with the Eastern Daily Press in which he reflected on his thirty years of service. One of the most surprising stories that he told was about when his police dog “went charging after” Queen Elizabeth’s grandson at the monarch’s Sandringham, her country estate where the royals traditionally spend Christmas together.
“I had a particularly interesting night when I was walking my dog off the lead around the grounds and he chased after the future king of England,” Chandler recalled. “It was late at night and Prince William was walking towards the garages and the dog picked up his scent and went charging after him.”
Luckily for Chandler, William took the incident “in good jest.”
“It could have gone horribly wrong if he was bitten, but fortunately the dog did what it was supposed to do, and just stood back and barked at him,” Chandler remembered. “It was a memorable night.”
William is known for being a dog lover, as most of the British royal family is. Sadly, William and his wife Kate Middleton lost their beloved black cocker spaniel Lupo back in November.
“Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. – W & C,” they wrote on social media at the time.

William is not the only royal who has been mistaken for a trespasser over the years. The Times of London reported that the Queen was once nearly shot by a guard at Buckingham Palace during one of her late night walks.
When the Queen can’t sleep, she likes taking late night walks, which is how she ended up outside on the Buckingham Palace grounds at around 3am one night. A patrolman then came across a “figure in the darkness” and assumed the worst, immediately shouting to ask who was there.
You can imagine his surprise when it turned out to be the Queen herself!
“Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you,” the guard reportedly said to her after she revealed her identity.
“That’s quite all right,” she fired back. “Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”
