Betsy Fresse from New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against Starbucks after they allegedly fired her because she refused to wear a pro-LGBTQ company shirt. Becky claimed wearing the pride shirt would violate her deeply held religious beliefs.
According to the lawsuit, Betsy Fresse, a Christian from Newark, was attending a meeting in her manager’s office at the Glen Ridge location in June 2019 when she noticed a box of Starbucks-branded “pride” t-shirts, NBC News reported.
Fresse proceeded to ask her manager if she would be required to wear one — which would violate her religious beliefs — and she was allegedly assured that she would not.
But several weeks later, Fresse was contacted by Starbucks’ ethics and compliance department about not wanting to wear the shirt. She told the company official that doing so would compromise her religious beliefs. Then, on Aug. 22, 2019, the lawsuit alleges that Fresse was fired because “her comportment was not in compliance with Starbucks’ core values.”
How many times have we heard this type of story? Countless. Are you tired of this happening in America? Those who adhere to traditional Christian values about homosexuality and marriage are attacked and discriminated against. The extreme part of the LGBTQ crowd will seek to destroy you and your business if you do not toe the line. Look at Chick-fil-A. The activists have tried, thankfully unsuccessfully, to destroy that business through bullying, shaming, and boycotts.
Starbucks has denied the allegation, stating, “We are very aware of the claims by Mrs. Fresse, which are without merit and we are fully prepared to present our case in court,” the spokesperson said. “Specific to our dress code, other than our green apron, no part of our dress code requires partners to wear any approved items that they have not personally selected.”
If Fresse’s allegations are true, I would argue that being pro any type of sexual activity should not be an essential part of making coffee drinks. My guess would also be that this story might be different if Fresse were a hijab-wearing Muslim.
Starbucks is a very pro-LGBTQ company. They are loud and proud about it so Fresse’s claims have a ring of truth to me. I cannot imagine many Starbucks employees would refuse to wear a Pride shirt and would bet there would be tons of pressure to conform. It is not a big leap of faith to believe that this company, that is so rabidly pro-LGBTQ, would terminate an employee for not sharing this precious core value.
We’ll have to wait and see how the lawsuit turns out. It’s one to watch.
