Last week, we reported that the golfing legend Tiger Woods had been in a serious car crash, and he has been hospitalized ever since. Now, he has broken his silence for the first time since his crash to thank his peers after they honored him by wearing his signature red shirts at a golfing tournament.

“It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts,” Woods wrote on his official Twitter account. “To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time.”

This came after Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Cameron Champ, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau, Jason Day, Justin Thomas and other golfers as well wore red shirts and black pants at The Concession, which is the first WGC event of 2021. They did this too honor Woods and show him that their thoughts are with him, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Early last Tuesday morning, Woods was involved in a single-vehicle crash on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes in California. Firefighters had to pull Woods from his vehicle, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he had to have surgery on his leg. Dr. Anish Mahajan of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said that this surgery was for “significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity.”

A source close to Woods, 45, said that he has a “long recovery ahead.”

“When he is healed enough, he will need other treatments, including physical therapy. But he is a fighter. If anyone can recover from this, it is him,” the source told People Magazine of Woods.

“He wore a seatbelt thankfully. Otherwise, he might not have made it,” the source added. “I’ve seen collisions that didn’t look as serious where the occupants were injured much more severely. I think that’s just a testament to the fact that he was wearing a seatbelt, airbags worked as intended.”

Another source said that Woods “doesn’t want his career to end like this,” adding, “So if there’s any way at all that he can continue playing golf, he will.”

“He expected 2021 to be the year of his comeback. Obviously, that’s not going to happen now. And that’s disappointing to him,” the insider continued. “This is a massive setback and he knows that it’s a massive setback but he’s overcome obstacles in the past and thinks he can do it again.”
