Trump Says Harris Was His ‘Number One Pick’ for Biden VP

President Donald Trump said on Aug. 11 that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) was his number one choice for the running mate of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

“So she was my number-one pick,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “I mean, she was—as they would say, because hopefully you’ll start college football—she was my number-one draft pick. And we’ll see how she works out.”

“She did very, very poorly in the primaries, as you know. She was expected to do well, and she was—she ended up at right around 2 percent, and spent a lot of money. She had a lot of things happening. And so I was a little surprised that he picked her. I’ve been watching her for a long time, and I was a little surprised,” Trump continued.

Biden announced his choice of Harris after months of speculation about a running mate. Harris was one of more than twenty candidates in a crowded Democratic primary before she dropped out and endorsed Biden. The pair clashed during one of the primary debates when Harris insinuated that Biden was a racist because of opposition school busing.

Trump said he was surprised by the pick because some of the other primary candidates did much better during the early primary elections. He criticized Harris for her hard-left stances on issues like socialized medicine and illegal immigration.

The president also said he will not soon forget how Harris treated Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during the spectacle of his confirmation hearings.

“She was nasty to a level that was just a horrible thing. The way she was—the way she treated now-Justice Kavanaugh. And I won’t forget that soon,” Trump said.

“That was a horrible event. I thought it was terrible for her. I thought it was terrible for our nation. I thought she was the meanest, the most horrible, most disrespectful of anybody in the U.S. Senate.”

The Biden campaign and Harris’ office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In his announcement, Biden referred to Harris as “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants.”

“Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau,” Biden wrote on Twitter referring to his late son Beau Biden. “I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”

Biden and Harris will appear together on Aug. 12 at a campaign event in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden’s hometown.
