Ukrainian-born actress Mila Kunis has opened up about why her family left their homeland for America.
“I was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine in 1983,” Kunis explained. “I came to America in 1991. I have always considered myself American, a proud American.”
“I love everything that this country has done for myself and my family,” she said of America. “But today, I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian.”
“And I’ve never been more proud to be married to a Ukrainian,” Kutcher chimed in.
“The events that have unfolded in Ukraine are devastating. There is no place in this world for this kind of unjust attack on humanity,” Kunis went on.
Along with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, the A-list Hollywood couple has pledged to donate up to $3 million to support Ukraine.
Kunis has previously noted that her parents chose to come to the United States to give their children a better life.
“It was very communist, and my parents wanted my brother and me to have a future, and so they just dropped everything,” Kunis told LA Times in 2008. “They came with $250.”
Kutcher released a video to his Twitter account, which detailed their plan.
Kunis explained that she is “proud” of her Ukrainian heritage and wanted to provide aid for refugees.
Up to 1 million people are expected to flee the country as the Russian invasion, according to some estimates.

“While we witness the bravery of the people of the country that she was born in we’re also witness to the needs of those who have chosen safety,” Kutcher said. “We’re raising funds to support a relief effort that will have immediate impact and supply much needed refugee and humanitarian aid in the area.”
“The principal challenge right now is logistics. We need to get housing, and we need to get supplies and resources into the area,” Kutcher said.
The couple is planning to match a combined $3 million to both organizations.
“The people of Ukraine are strong and brave but being strong and brave doesn’t mean you’re not worthy of support. We need to support the people of Ukraine. Please help us,” Kunis said.
“If you know someone from Russia Call them and tell them their media is lying to them,” Kutcher wrote on Twitter. “Ukraine doesn’t want to fight, they just don’t want Putin’s government and don’t want to be occupied.”
The relief effort is going through GoFundMe. The money will be distributed to Flexport.org and Airbnb.org.
Both of those companies have been assisting Ukrainians in need directly.
Kunis also shared the same message in Ukrainian.
