Patients and doctors are relying on telehealth options when dealing with almost anything that isn’t coronavirus related.
With that being said, I feel like it should be common sense that physical exams, especially ones that are internal, would not be handled through telehealth. But there is always one person that allows themselves to be the one who learns a lesson for the rest of us.
The Daily Mail reported that a woman in Russia learned the hard way when a man disguised as a gynecologist tricked her into filming her physical exam and sending it to him. The fake GYN then told her he suspected her of having genital herpes and needed to have a better look. After the visit, the man said if she didn’t want her physical exam to be leaked on the internet that she needed to pay him $2,000.
The Daily Mail reported:
“A Russian woman has warned against fake online gynaecologists during the lockdown after she was blackmailed by a bogus doctor.
The victim, from the Kaluga, 160 miles south of Moscow, sought help from her hospital and an online forum but was refused an appointment due to the lockdown and a ban on nonessential consultations.
The woman in her 30s, named Maria, was soon afterwards approached online by a ‘gynaecologist’ named Arnold Karapetyan who offered her a web consultation.”
The woman said she doesn’t “even want to tell my close friends… because I’m ashamed.”
She goes on to tell how the man explained how to set up the camera and the lighting and what position she needed to take in order to get the best possible outcome.
The report says the police are now looking into the lockdown fraud and there are suspicions the same man had other victims.
I didn’t think I had to say this, but you can’t tell whether you have an STD by a video conference call. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but come on. This is one lesson that genuinely didn’t need learning. I would have suspected this kind of behavior from teenagers, not an adult woman.
