Politico reports that President Joe Biden is reportedly thinking of granting amnesty to illegal immigrants “in an effort to handle the worsening immigration problem.”
The president and his staff say they are now evaluating a range of possibilities to adopt a more “aggressive” approach in response to continuous criticism that Biden has not done enough to address illegal immigration or the southern border issue, according to the White House.
Three people with knowledge of the plans who spoke with Politico said that the administration may start giving green cards to illegal immigrants who have been in the country for a “significant length of time,” thus allowing them to stay in the country and receiving amnesty.
Reports state that the proposal would enable immigrants who have been in the nation for more than ten years to request the discontinuation of the removal program on the grounds that deportation would harm their families.
A migrant will receive a special green card, granting them permanent residency, if an immigration court approves their request for cancellation of removal and they meet the requirements.
The three officials who talked with Politico said that it would also be a part of Biden’s larger effort to represent illegal immigrants who have been in the US for a long time. Furthermore, the government has contemplated providing even greater support to cities and states that have accepted a significant number of undocumented immigrants, such as Denver, Colorado, and New York City.
In the past, Biden asserted that he needed authorization from Congress in order to address the situation at the southern border or illegal immigration, even going so far as to blame Republican members for impeding his efforts.
“I’ve exhausted all my options. Give me the power, please. I have made this request since the day I took office,” Biden declared on January 30.
