Democrats Forced Into Corner – Now Supporting Border Security?

This week, a group of moderate House Democrats urged Congress and President Biden to move toward securing the border between the United States and Mexico.

Following Biden’s signing of a $95 billion foreign aid package into law, Reps. Mary Peltola (D-AK), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), Jared Golden (D-ME), and Don Davis (D-NC) issued a statement. According to The Cook Political Report, all of these candidates are considered to be in “toss up” or “lean Democrat” races in 2024.

“Our interests in national security extend beyond the boundaries of our country.””We voted to provide Ukraine with more weaponry so that it can combat Russia for that reason,” they stated. We must never forget the lesson of Pearl Harbor: giving in to violence only encourages it against us. We would sooner send “bullets than American lads,” as Speaker [Mike] Johnson said last week.

The organization claimed that, in addition to standing up for American allies, they “strongly agree” with the National Border Patrol Council that “the President and Congress must bring order to the Southern border.”

“That is why we all voted for the $19.6 billion for Border Patrol so they could ramp up efforts to protect the border, and why we also voted for H.R. 3602 on Saturday,” they said, making reference to border security legislation that was not passed while lawmakers were debating a series of bills for the foreign aid package.

According to the Democrats, they are “calling today on Biden to employ the authority given the executive by Congress to promptly reimplement” a part of the US Code that directs the repatriation of migrants to Mexico while legal processes are underway.

Additionally, they made reference to Title 42, which permitted authorities to swiftly turn away migrants at the border on the basis of public health during the epidemic, and urged leaders of both the House and the Senate to “act legislation to give them back the expulsion power that expired last year.”

The backlog of immigrants and asylum seekers expected to reach over 8 million by October has made border security and immigration policy major concerns for Americans, especially with the presidential election in November.

Hardline Part of the reason why Republicans resisted the foreign assistance bill, which aims to strengthen U.S. allies like Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine, was that it contained very few measures intended to ease the border problem.

One comment from the House Democrats’ statement came from National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, who spoke with Fox News the previous weekend.

“We express profound disappointment that the House provided assistance to safeguard international borders while withholding funds to enable the Border Patrol to ensure the security of the country,” stated Judd.

He went on, “There is nothing more retrograde; I never would have imagined using government money. If they had just handed us the policy, it would have sufficed.
