New Data Shows Omicron May Be About as Deadly as the SEASONAL FLU

As data begins to surface about the Omicron variant, we are learning it may be far less deadly than earlier variants.

Some comparisons are even being made to the seasonal flu in terms of fatality rates.

As reported by The Daily Mail, some experts believe the worst of the pandemic is over when viewing fatality rates.

At its peak, the coronavirus killed one person out of 33 who tested positive. This occurred during the second deadly wave of coronavirus last January.

The fatality rate of coronavirus has now dropped to one person out of 670. “Experts believe the figure could be even lower because of Omicron,” Daily Mail reports. The fatality rate is roughly 0.15.

In comparison, the case fatality rate for seasonal influenza is 0.1, which is one person out of 1,000 people.

Moreover, the Covid infection fatality rate drops precipitously by age group from elderly to young.

For young people, Covid-related death rates are much lower than most everyday activities, such as being driven to school or swimming.

It is also far lower than suicide, heart disease and cancer for young people.

This means the risk for the youngest groups is infinitesimal, according to experts sourced by the Daily Mail.

“Omicron could be even less deadly than flu, scientists believe in a boost to hopes that the worst of the pandemic is over,” the Daily Mail reported. “Some experts have always maintained that the coronavirus would eventually morph into a seasonal cold-like virus as the world develops immunity through vaccines and natural infection. But the emergence of the highly-mutated Omicron variant appears to have sped the process up”…

“No accurate infection-fatality rate (IFR), which is always just a fraction of the CFR because it reflects deaths among everyone who catches the virus, has yet been published for Delta,” the Mail notes.

“But UK Government advisers estimated the overall figure stood at around 0.25 per cent before Omicron burst onto the scene, down from highs of around 1.5 per cent,” the article continued.

“If Omicron is 99 per cent less lethal than Delta, it suggests the current IFR could be as low as 0.0025 per cent, the equivalent of one in 40,000, although experts say this is unlikely,” the Mail added. “Instead, the Washington modelling estimates the figure actually sits in the region of 0.07 per cent, meaning approximately one in 1,430 people who get infected will succumb to the illness.”

“Leading researchers estimate flu’s IFR to sit between 0.01 and 0.05 per cent but argue comparing rates for the two illnesses is complicated,” the Mail reported.

A chart in the The Washington Post shows that while there has been a ‘tsunami’ of Omicron cases in the United States, the hospitalization has bent up slightly and the death rate has plateaued.
