Strike the Filibuster or Face GOP Extinction

President Trump is absolutely right: it’s time to kill the filibuster.

For far too long, the filibuster has been the last refuge of career politicians more interested in preserving Senate club rules than delivering victories for the American people. Now, in the middle of a government shutdown—38 days and counting—the stakes couldn’t be higher. Trump is putting his foot down, warning Republican senators that if they continue to cling to this outdated relic, they’ll be voted out of office. And he’s not wrong.

“Republicans, Terminate the Filibuster and bring back the American Dream,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “If you don’t do it, the Dems will, and you’ll never see office again!”

Let’s be clear: Democrats have no loyalty to the filibuster. They’ve threatened it, chipped away at it, and will not hesitate to destroy it the second it stands in their way. They’ve already gutted it for judicial appointments. If Republicans continue playing by gentlemen’s rules in a knife fight, they’ll be the ones bleeding out politically.

Trump understands that. Many Republican voters understand that. Unfortunately, too many GOP senators still don’t.

Sen. John Thune, the current Senate Majority Leader, is among those dragging their feet. Thune insists the votes aren’t there to end the filibuster and that it won’t change under his leadership. That’s the problem. Leadership isn’t about taking a poll to decide what’s popular—it’s about doing what’s necessary. And right now, what’s necessary is ending this shutdown and passing the agenda the American people elected Republicans to deliver.

Let’s not forget why we’re here. This shutdown is being held hostage by Democrats demanding more Obamacare subsidies. We’ve been through this theater before—Democrats threatening to grind the government to a halt unless more taxpayer money is shoveled into their broken healthcare scheme. And what’s stopping us from breaking the deadlock? The filibuster. Not public opinion. Not the Constitution. Just a procedural rule that gives the minority party a veto over the majority’s will.

Trump has been consistent on this issue. Back in 2017, during his first term, he said it plainly: “Republican Senate must get rid of 60 vote NOW! It is killing the R Party, allows 8 Dems to control country. 200 Bills sit in Senate. A JOKE!” He was right then, and he’s right now.

And the numbers don’t lie. According to a recent Washington Examiner poll, 47% of Senate Republicans want to keep the filibuster. That means a majority either want to end it or are on the fence. This isn’t some fringe position. It’s a growing movement inside our party, fueled by grassroots conservatives who are sick of watching weak-kneed senators surrender every time Chuck Schumer throws a tantrum.

The old guard keeps warning us that eliminating the filibuster is dangerous, that it could come back to haunt us. But here’s the reality: Democrats have already shown they’ll do it the moment it benefits them. They’re just waiting for the numbers. So the real question is—do we want to govern while we have the chance, or do we want to sit on our hands and wait for Democrats to do what we were too scared to?

The American people didn’t send Republicans to Washington to babysit Senate traditions. They sent them to cut taxes, secure the border, drain the swamp, and put America First. Every day the filibuster stands in the way of that mission is another day we betray the voters who gave us this mandate.

President Trump is leading. He’s calling for decisive action. It’s time Republican senators stop hiding behind procedural excuses and start acting like the majority party.

Terminate the filibuster. End the shutdown. Deliver for the American people.

Or get ready to be replaced by someone who will.
