Students at Stanford University who want to take a marketing class from the Department of Management Science and Engineering must fill out a “Diversity and Inclusion Statement.”
As the smart people at The College Fix pointed out, Stanford University students must explain how they will add to diversity in order to be accepted into a Global Entrepreneurial Marketing class offered by the Department of Management Science and Engineering.
It says, “Diversity is an important part of the goal of the Stanford MS&E Department and this class. Please use this chance to talk about how you will help make this class a place where everyone feels welcome and accepted.”
There is only so much room in the online course, so the description says, “Interested students who wish to enroll in this course will go through a review process and will be informed of choices prior to the start of the course.”
A Stanford college student who did not want to be named because they were afraid of “retaliation by the Stanford community” sent a picture of the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) requirement.
The student said, “There is a culture of fear on campus, and many people try to shut down, shame, and silence views they don’t agree with.”
“Also, teachers and teaching fellows have a lot of power in the classroom, and many of them use it to silence students who don’t agree with them or ask important questions,” the student said.
“I am very upset and worried that Stanford Engineering has started asking DEI promises in order to take a course. Stanford became famous by breaking rules and practices, not by making people follow the rules and think like a group,” the student said.
When asked what gender the student is on the application form, the five available choices are, as you might think, “Male,” “Female,” “Gender Variant/Non-Conforming,” “Other,” and “Decline to state.”
